September 13 – 15, 1996
Rd1 – Michaywe (Pines GC)
Rd2 – Elk Ridge GC
Rd3 – Wilderness Valley (Black Forest GC)
In less than ideal conditions, Kurt Goetzke (Canton, MI) weathered the final round storm to win his first TPC title.
Goetzke led after round one and was only one shot off the pace after round two, a model of consistency the entire tournament.
Battling Goetzke over the final holes were Steve Lawler (St Clair Shores, MI) and Jeff Longeway (Livonia, MI), however both would fade once the final groups combined as an eight-some, finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively.
Once announced as the champion, Goetzke proclaimed “Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world.”
The leader though 36 holes, Karl Nagy (Livonia, MI) produced a less than spectacular final round and slumped to seventh.
The other top five finishers include 4th Todd Statetzny (Dearborn Heights, MI) and 5th Chris Lemmon (Westland, MI).
Noteworthy – Matt Sica (Redford, MI) became the first during TPC competition to make a hole-in-one, acing the 12th hole (189 yards) during the final round. Congrats Matt!
