Steve Lawler (Chesterfield, MI) cruised to victory at the 2011 TPC, finishing 17 strokes ahead of runner-up Ron Clifton (Richland, MI)

This victory, Lawler’s second, earned him ten Hall of Fame points, pushing his total to 43 and entry into the TPC Hall of Fame.

Lawler becomes the first player to earn the required 40 points for HoF entry. In honor of this accomplishment, the Ralph Guldahl Memorial Trophy will also be known as the Steve Lawler Trophy going forward.

Asked about his victory, Lawler stated “My father said there were two kinds of people in the world: givers and takers. The takers may eat better, but the givers sleep better.”

36-hole leader Jeff Pretzer (Macomb, MI) was unavailable for weekend play, eliminating any roadblocks to a Lawler victory.

Jeff Longeway’s (Plymouth, MI) bid for back-to-back titles never really materialized, as he finished in 9th place.

Other players finishing in the top five were 3rd Chris Lemmon (Richmond, VA), 4th Kurt Goetzke (Berkley, MI) and tied 5th Karl Nagy (Simpsonville, SC) and Coree Raden (Caledonia, MI).

This win moves Lawler into the category of multiple TPC champion (2005, 2011), along with Raden (2001, 2002, 2006), Goetzke (1996, 2007), Nagy (1999, 2008) and Longeway (2003, 2010).

Noteworthy – This year four players DQ’ed due to the fact they could not attend every round. This ties the record for most tournament DQ’s set in 2000.
