Kurt Goetzke (Clawson, MI) needed extra holes to defeat Karl Nagy (Simpsonville, SC) and claim his 2nd TPC.
Goetzke and Nagy matched each other the entire tournament, with no player winning a round by more than 3 strokes.
The outcome was decided on the third playoff hole, when Goetzke found the green with his approach and Nagy did not.
Once the champion medallion was placed around his neck, Goetzke cried out “When everything seems to be going against you, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it.”
Rounding out the top five were 3rd Ron Clifton (Richland, MI), 4th Steve Lawler (Macomb Twp, MI) and 5th Dan McKay (Warren, MI).
This victory is a second TPC for Goetzke (1996, 2008), moving him beside Coree Raden (Caledonia, MI – 2001, 2002, 2006) as the only multiple champions.
Noteworthy – This was the first TPC played outside of the USA, and the first to be decided in a sudden death playoff.
